1 '"You can set up turn counters to make it necessary to do things within time limits. You can set limits on the number of items worn and carried. You can set upconditions that have to be met before certain events can occur. And, of course, you can define your complete vocabulary."
1 '"To solve the adventure Ug must: GO SOUTH GET TWIG GO WEST GET CLUB GO EAST GO SOUTH KILL SNAKE DROP CLUB GET DIAMOND GO NORTH GO WEST GO NORTH GIVE DIAMOND LIGHT TWIGGO SOUTH GO EAST GO NORTH LIGHT FIRE."
1 '"There is also a review of Gilsoft's adventure-writing package, The Quill; and a look at how adventures are created."
1 '"The first is a fiendish text andgraphics adventure set in the future on a not distant planet. The fair Countess Andromeda has been kidnapped by a race of robots and it is up to you to rescue her.":
1 '"Next you must decide on the structure of the adventure - howmany locations, how many objectsand where they are, how do the locations connect together...."
1 '"Next is a fairytale adventure - solve the riddle of the Demon Knight and win the kingdom. Thisis deceptively difficult but very logical: it is not a giant adventure but you will have to use your imagination to solve it.":
1 '"Let's look at a small adventure.Ug is a caveman who wants to light his fire. to do this he must get a flame from his neigh-bour. However they have argued, so Ug must use persuasion to gethis fire."
1 '"It is accompanied by a very thick booklet explaining how it works. Summing up The Quill is no easy job as there are so manyfeatures, but I will do my best."
1 '"In this game you control a team of four adventurers who are searching the labyrinth of the tomb, finding treasure and fighting monsters. No puzzles tosolve here, your only problem isto survive!":
1 '"If you are interested in writingadventures and want a fast way of producing them then I fully recommend Gilsoft's product. Butdon't take my word for it, checkout ROBOCITY on this tape - it was written using The Quill!"
1 '"Good luck, now go ahead and havesome fiendish fun with your friends!"
1 '"Finally, when your brain gets tired of cogitation, there is a full-graphics battle adventure set in Ellak's Tomb. Find the five treasures of Ellak and raise the curse from the Empire."
1 '"But that's enough chat, on with the show!"

1 "Up to 255 objects can be definedand they can be hidden, obvious, taken, impossible to take, worn, consumed - you name it, you can probably do it!"
1 "This issue is an extra bonus forall you readers of the magazine, and includes three great full- length adventure games to keep you busy over the Yuletide."
1 "This also gives us our verb and noun list:"''" VERBS NOUNS"'
1 "There is a full editior for youradventures, and your adventure can be saved to tape when it is complete. One great advantage isthat the adventure can then be loaded without having loaded TheQuill - you can give copies to your friends, or even sell them:Gilsoft has given permission."
1 "The way to set this all up in BASIC is a complex problem, but if you look at the listing of Demon Knight it should give you some idea. Look at how the instructions given by the playerare first separated into two words, then tested against listsof valid words, and finally acted upon. Note how the objectsare allocated to locations and how the locations are linked together."
1 "The adventure has only five locations:"
1 "The Quill allows entry of up to 255 locations, with up to six connections from each location. Full descriptions of each locattion can be given, and character graphics pictures can be put into the text. Hi-res "
1 "THE QUILL price 14.95 REVIEW"':
1 "OK, so you want to write an adventure. But where to start? It may seem obvious, but first you must find a subject. It mustbe a reasonable subject around which an adventure can be set."
1 "Now let's set up the objects. InUg's cave is an unlit fire, in Ig's cave is a lit fire. On Ug'spath there is a twig, which is needed to carry the flame. In the Wilderness there is a burieddiamond and a snake. On Ig's path there is a club to kill thesnake with."
1 "Note I have included IG as a noun as the player may try to KILL IG. Obviously if this happens then either Ig's fire should go out in the struggle orIg should kill Ug. Also we will have to make sure the diamond cannot be got until the snake iskilled, and Ig will not allow Ugto light his twig until he has the diamond."
1 "Before we start, The Quill is not a game. It is a program thatallows you to design adventure games to your own specification, and do it fast."
1 " Welcome to the Xmas Special!"
1 " This magazine is made up of a number of articles and other programs chained together like the welcome tape that came with your computer. It may not always work with microdrives."
1 " The best way to read it is to load the articles in sequence following the on-screen prompts. However, you can load individual programs using the program names in the table of contents on the next page."
   1 " SPECTRUM COMPUTING - ISSUE 11 XMAS
1 " Please note that some files may need more than one load, but they all auto-run and tell you when to start and stop the tape."
